Talking Points

What I found in my job search is that having an active GitHub portfolio is very helpful for interviews. Not only does it keep your coding skills sharp and prepare you for technical questions, but it also provides valuable talking points. There have been times when interviewers asked me behavioral questions like “Tell me about a time when…” and I couldn’t recall relevant examples from my previous roles. In those cases, I was able to discuss projects I worked on in my portfolio instead. Additionally, some interviewers have reviewed my GitHub repositories before the interview and asked me to explain them. This demonstrates that you’re not only learning on the job but also making time to level up your skills and showing a willingness to learn new tech stacks.

Add it to your Resume

Once you have a GitHub portfolio, be sure to add it to your resume. Including your GitHub link gives recruiters and hiring managers direct access to your coding style, problem-solving approach, and the types of projects you’re passionate about. It offers tangible proof of your technical abilities beyond what a resume or cover letter can communicate. Reviewing your work helps them form a more complete picture of you as a candidate—your initiative, consistency, and willingness to learn new technologies. It also creates opportunities to discuss specific projects during interviews, making your conversations more engaging and impactful.
